How does a water softener work?
A conventional water softener works by ion exchange. Hard water is high in dissolved calcium and magnesium — the minerals that form limescale. Inside the softener is a tank of small resin beads that hold onto sodium ions. As your mains water passes through, the calcium and magnesium stick to the beads and an equivalent amount of sodium is released in their place. The water that comes out has almost no hardness left in it, so it lathers easily and leaves no scale.
Over a few days the beads fill up with calcium and magnesium and stop working.
