England's chalk and limestone belt gives some cities among the hardest tap water in Europe, while cities fed by upland reservoirs enjoy some of the softest. We pulled the hardness figure (in mg/l calcium carbonate) for the main supply zone of each major UK city from our own database, which holds official water-company data for all 22 UK water companies and 1,614 supply zones.

These figures are for each city's dominant supply zone. Anything above 200 mg/l is classed as hard, and above 300 mg/l as very hard.

Ipswich tops the list at around 435 mg/l, followed by Hull, Norwich, Luton and Cambridge — all firmly in eastern England's chalk and limestone country. The single hardest zone in our entire dataset is Anglian Water's Harleston supply in Norfolk at roughly 523 mg/l.

Glasgow has the softest city water in Britain at about 16 mg/l, drawn from Loch Katrine in the Trossachs. Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham (fed by the Elan Valley in Wales), Sheffield and Liverpool all sit in the very soft band.
Why is water hard in some cities and soft in others?
Hardness is almost entirely a matter of geology. Where rain falls on chalk and limestone — as across the South East and East of England — it dissolves calcium and magnesium on its way to the aquifer, producing hard water. Where water is collected from granite uplands, peat moorland and reservoirs — Scotland, Wales, the North West — it picks up very little mineral content and stays soft. It is not a sign of better or worse quality: both hard and soft water are safe to drink and meet the same legal standards.
What hard water means for you
Hard water leaves limescale in kettles, boilers and washing machines, and uses more soap and detergent. It is the reason a water softener can pay for itself in a genuinely hard area. Soft water lathers easily and leaves no scale, so a softener there would do nothing useful.
